But what is attachment theory and why should you care when it comes to dating?

Adult attachment theory stems from how you were cared for as a baby and continues to be influenced by life experiences throughout your lifetime. The theory identifies three main “attachment styles” which determine how people receive and respond to intimacy in romantic relationships: Secure, Anxious, and Avoidant. People with these attachment styles differ in:

Their view of intimacy and togetherness

The way they deal with conflict

Their attitude toward sex

Their ability to communicate their wants and needs

Their expectations from their partner and the relationship

Understanding attachment styles is a helpful tool to gain insight and predict people’s behavior in romantic situations. It is also key to understanding your own wants and needs in a relationship.
