The Benefits Of Being Single

I stumbled upon this great Tik Tok by a creator talking about the benefits of being single (and by stumbled I mean while scrolling for hours). She acknowledges that of course she wants to meet someone but that it’s easy to forget all of the benefits that come with being single and how a lot of people in relationships miss certain aspects of their single life. She then asks her followers who are in a relationship to comment on what they miss about being single. And the comments are so good! Here are a few examples:

  • Being able to watch whatever I want on TV

  • Making plans and not worrying about literally anyone else or having to check in with someone else

  • Rot days where I just lay on the couch eating whatever, whenever I want without anyone seeing or judging

  • Quiet / slow Sunday resets that don't involve football

  • Missing dating in general and the fun stories that come with it

And these are just the fun ones! There are even more impactful and deeper benefits that you can think about when it comes to being single.

Here are five life changing positives I have found from my time being single:

  1. I have become more independent which has pushed me to do things outside of my comfort zone like moving to Austin, making new friends, showing up to events alone and traveling to new places

  2. I have done a lot of growing and self work on myself to know who I am as a person and to not allow people into my life who make me feel less than

  3. I realize that I don't need a partner to make my life amazing so I have created that amazing life for myself

  4. I am clearer on what I want and don't want in a partner so I won't settle in my dating life; something that I would have done when I was much younger and if I had not become single again in my 20's

  5. I have a lot of pride in myself and how I have handled this single stage in my life

I know at times being single can be hard and in those low moments, it can be difficult to remember the benefits. But I am a huge believer that there is so much power and incredible self work done in the time while you are single. And when you find your person (because it’s not a matter of if but a matter of when), you won’t get these single days back. You have the rest of your life to be in a committed relationship, so take full advantage of this moment in time and all it has to offer you.

If you have not taken the time to write down the benefits you have found from being single, I recommend setting aside 30 minutes of quiet uninterrupted time with a journal and just start writing. Write all of them down - from the super impactful ones to the fun and light ones. And then in those low moments, come back to this list as a reminder.
